John 1:26 (KJV) The One in Your Midst

John 1:26 (KJV)

John answered them, saying, I baptize with water: but there standeth one among you, whom ye know not;

Though John had not yet pointed Him out—and I’m not sure God had even confirmed to John exactly who He was—John could still say to this crowd, “there standeth one among you.”

He knew the Saviour, the Messiah, the Lamb of God was already among them.

“Whom ye know not.”

There is both the opportunity, the charge, and the tragedy.

The opportunity
The Saviour, Jesus Christ, is already among us. He is a God near at hand. He is not far from every one of us. He is our life, our breath, our very reason for being. And He is here!

The charge
John’s calling—as it is for all believers—is to point others to Christ. We have days of uncertainty, days of weakness, and days of clarity. Still, we are the light of the world. The darkness wants to overwhelm us, but all we must do is tell others that there is light.

The tragedy
“Whom ye know not.”
Jesus was right there. John had been sent to bear witness of Him, yet they still did not recognize Him. This tragedy unfolds countless times even today. Christ is here. His witnesses are here. Still, the multitudes do not know Him.

It will continue this way until the last day.
But there will be a day when every eye shall see Him.
What a day that will be.
