Judges 1:7 (KJV) Where Critics Go Wrong About Canaan

Judges 1:7 (KJV)

And Adonibezek said, Threescore and ten kings, having their thumbs and their great toes cut off, gathered their meat under my table: as I have done, so God hath requited me. And they brought him to Jerusalem, and there he died.

Haters of God, of the Christian faith, and of the Bible often point to Israel’s conquest of the Promised Land and accuse the God of Scripture of being a monster. They don’t actually believe the events happened—what they reject is the character of the God described in the Bible, claiming He is brutal and cruel.

But many of these accusations are built on a prejudiced view of the world conditions in that era. They imagine God and Israel as the aggressors while treating the people of Canaan as innocent victims.

In this passage, we have the testimony of one of their own—Adonibezek—who openly admits that his condemnation was just.

We may be repulsed by the brutality described in these verses, but that does not make them inaccurate or unjust. It simply reminds us that circumstances in those days were far harsher than anything we’ve experienced today. Because we have nothing in our modern lives to compare to that world, we really have no basis from which to judge it.

This is similar to the modern criticisms people level at men like George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. Yes, they were flawed—all have sinned and come short of the glory of God. But the record also shows they were good men wrestling with the challenges of their time. We have no grounds to say what we would have done had we lived in their world under their pressures.

The Bible gives an accurate account of what took place. It provides historical context and reveals the character of God in contrast to the sinful nature of man. Most importantly, Scripture is the lamp that lights the path to forgiveness, salvation, and eternal sanctification in the presence of Almighty God.
