And the children of Israel cried unto the LORD, saying, We have sinned against thee, both because we have forsaken our God, and also served Baalim.
These two sins always run together. One leads to the other, or the presence of one proves the presence of the other.
- We have forsaken our God.
- We have also served Baalim.
Notice the possessive phrase: “our God.”
There is only one true and living God. Israel knew Him, yet they were continually drawn away. The people around them—with their power, prominence, and constant influence—pulled at their hearts. He was not their God, but He could have been. He is the Creator of all men, the Lover of all men, and desires that none should perish but that all should come to repentance.
But God was Israel’s God. To forsake the God you know… the God of your fathers… the God who has proven Himself again and again in your life and your family—this is a sin almost unimaginable. Yet it still happens often.
Notice also the false god named: Baalim.
A few verses later, God simply calls them “other gods.” Baalim becomes a general term—representing any god we elevate above the Lord. Baalim is the ultimate violation of the first commandment. It is anything, anyone, everything, or everyone we place before God.
Baalim is the god of this world, whatever name we give it—even when we do not think of it as a god.
To put anything ahead of the Lord is, by definition, to forsake Him.
