Judges 9:9 (KJV) Lesson for Today’s Leaders

Judges 9:9 (KJV)

But the olive tree said unto them, Should I leave my fatness, wherewith by me they honour God and man, and go to be promoted over the trees?

The lessons in this passage deal mostly with those who choose poor leaders. We’re watching a crisis unfold in our world today for that very reason. Otherwise good people have chosen brambles to lead them. Sadly, those brambles will destroy them long before they themselves are destroyed.

My focus today, though, is on the choices of those who would be leaders. Jotham, the last living son of Gideon, chides Shechem by listing three fruit-bearing trees before mentioning the bramble:

The olive tree—valued for its oils and “fatness.” Why would those who can provide health leave such a calling to pursue political leadership?

The fig tree—famous for its sweetness. Why would those who can enrich life step away from that calling to chase political power?

The grape vine—able to bring joy to both God and man. Why would those called to such a ministry abandon it for political leadership?

We absolutely need good leaders, and those called of God into that field are few. When God calls a man to that life, he should pursue it. But far too many brambles—regardless of party—have been elected.

My concern is when those called of God to other fields walk away from their calling for politics.

Doctors.
Educators.
And first on my list—preachers.

Why would a man called to the most valuable work in the world give it up for a field so clearly given over to Satan? Jesus had no interest in the kingdoms of this world. I cannot imagine why a man called of God into the ministry would ever take an interest in it.
