And he said, They were my brethren, even the sons of my mother: as the LORD liveth, if ye had saved them alive, I would not slay you.
It is often assumed that the people in that region of the world all wore similar clothing and followed similar customs. Much of the modern picture of biblical Israel is really just a projection of current Middle Eastern culture. People imagine the Hebrew language sounding like what is spoken there today. They assume the clothing of ancient Israel looked like what the present inhabitants wear.
Yet this text gives us a hint that such assumptions are off base. The kings said the men they had slain looked different—“even as the children of a king.” Israel’s language, culture, and appearance were entirely, radically, and completely unique from the nations around them.
And they resembled a King. Which King would that be? They were indeed the children of a King—the King of Glory. Shouldn’t it also be said of believers today that we are unique, distinct, even radically different from the world? Shouldn’t the children of God resemble their Father, the King of all Glory?
Notice Gideon’s response—another indication of mercy, even in the midst of destroying the enemies of God. He would have spared them had they not murdered the children of the King, his own brethren. The people Israel fought were not gracious hosts of God’s children but ill-tempered, violent men. Their judgment was just—and they knew it.

God’s People Look Different: Children of a King in a World Apart
If you’re searching for clear Bible answers and practical truth for daily living, this is a good place to dig in. God’s people have always been called to stand out, and Judges 8 reminds us why that matters today.
How does your walk reflect the King of Glory in a world that looks nothing like Him? Share your thoughts in the comments—your insight might encourage someone else.
