Judges 7:10 (KJV) The Unsung Helpers Behind Every Hero

Judges 7:10 (KJV)

But if thou fear to go down, go thou with Phurah thy servant down to the host:

I doubt there has ever been a man (except, of course, Jesus) who had no fear. Some men have done extraordinary things—feats of valor and heroism—in the most extreme circumstances. They acted without hesitation. They acted without reservation. They acted with what appeared to be no regard for self. Some of them did not survive to tell their tale. But from the testimonies of those like them who did survive, we can be sure they acted despite their fear and not in the absence of it.

Some of them acted alone (though I suspect they acted on behalf of others—they did not feel alone).

God knew Gideon would be afraid. God did not chastise or criticize his fear. But neither did God excuse him because of his fear. God provided a companion—another—to bolster him, to be with him, and to bear the burden alongside him.

I want to go on record praising God for Phurah, and for the many men and women like him whose names are not as well known and who are not credited with the mighty acts of our heroes—but without whom our heroes may never have acted.

It’s likely not appropriate at this moment to list the names of those who’ve been my “Phurah’s,” but there have been many. My wife has been the most long-standing of them, never leaving my side and always encouraging me in the contest. One man in particular stands out from my earliest pastorate. My youngest son served in that role for two decades in my last ministry.

I met a Phurah this week. The pastor confided to me his role but said that he had not told him—or anyone else in the church—how important he is to his ministry.

I end repeating—praise God for Phurah.

The Unsung Helpers Behind Every Hero: Courage Strengthened by a Friend

If you’ve ever faced fear and God sent someone to stand beside you, you know exactly how Gideon felt. The Lord still uses “Phurahs” today—faithful encouragers who strengthen us when our courage runs thin. If you’re searching for Bible answers, Christian encouragement, or guidance for your daily walk with God, you’re in the right place.

Question for you: Who has been a “Phurah” in your life—someone God used to help you move forward in faith? Share their impact in the comments.
