Job 22:6 (KJV)
For thou hast taken a pledge from thy brother for nought, and stripped the naked of their clothing.
It is one thing for a man to make vague accusations against another. Sometimes people do that simply to cast doubt. Aspersions without substance can do damage, even when they are unsubstantiated and cannot be proven.
But in this chapter Eliphaz gets specific.
According to Eliphaz, Job had:
- Taken a pledge from his brother for nought
- Stripped the naked of their clothing
- Refused water to the weary
- Withheld bread from the hungry
And the accusations continue.
The fact that Eliphaz could name specific offenses does not mean he understood what had actually happened.
Gill suggests that the pledge probably was not literally taken for nothing. Perhaps it involved such a small amount, or such a short period of time, that Eliphaz considered taking the pledge unreasonable or unkind.
That points to an important principle:
Actions can be misconstrued.
Job may have done things that Eliphaz and others saw only in part and then interpreted incorrectly. They might have known what Job did without knowing why he did it. They could have known some of the circumstances without knowing all of them.
We find something similar in the accusations made against Jesus.
John 2:19 (KJV)
“Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.”
Later, His words were used against Him. His accusers had something specific to point to. They had heard Him say something. But they did not rightly understand what He meant.
Jesus was not accountable for their misunderstanding of His words.
I remember something similar, though obviously on a much smaller scale, from when I first entered the ministry. A man asked me for financial help. He was obviously drunk and almost certainly would have used whatever money I gave him for alcohol rather than genuine needs. I had been taught that in such circumstances it was wiser to provide food rather than cash.
When I refused to give him money, he called me a “poor excuse for a preacher.”
From his perspective, he had a specific grievance. He asked a preacher for help, and the preacher refused.
But he misunderstood my responsibility. Helping him did not require me to give him money that I believed would enable the very behavior contributing to his need.
It is easy to build a case against someone when we have seen only part of the evidence.
That is worth remembering from both sides.
When someone misjudges us, we do not have to spend our lives trying to correct every accusation. We should examine ourselves honestly before God, correct what is wrong, and leave what is false with Him.
But we ought also to be careful when we are in Eliphaz’s position. We may have seen something. We may even have specific examples. That does not mean we know the whole story.
Eliphaz could make all the accusations he pleased. He could provide details. He could believe them sincerely.
He could still be wrong.
Job, as are we all, was ultimately accountable to God.
