Job 23:2 (KJV)
Even to day is my complaint bitter: my stroke is heavier than my groaning.
Christians these days often say things like, “God’s treating me better than I deserve.” Job seems to have said almost exactly the opposite: “I’m not complaining as loudly as I might!” Or maybe, “I have it far worse than you will ever know.”
Seriously! Job was in terrible pain. His stroke was heavier than his groaning. What he was going through was worse than what he was saying about it.
Sometimes life gets like that.
The loss of a loved one.
The worry over financial need.
The doctor’s diagnosis.
The separation from a friend.
Sometimes the grief a person endures is almost unbearable. And really, nobody wants to hear a person tell everything about how bad it is.
Back in the days of 2020, when churches suffered terribly, I heard one very popular preacher boast that none of the pastors he had spoken to had complained about their struggles.
That doesn’t mean they weren’t struggling. It might mean they knew he wasn’t the guy who wanted to hear about it.
Sometimes the burden is heavier than the groaning.
Sometimes God seems so far away. We don’t seem to get our prayers outside our room. We don’t know what God is doing, and maybe we don’t even know how to explain what we’re going through.
But here’s where Job was.
Despite all of that, he said the Word of God was more necessary to him than his daily food. And he knew that when God was finished with his trial, he would come forth as gold.
He didn’t say it didn’t hurt. Obviously, it did.
He didn’t say he understood it. He didn’t.
He just knew there were some things that were still true.
Sometimes that doesn’t feel like great consolation at the moment.
But it is a truth, and one to hold onto.

What do you do when God does not explain what He is doing? Job 39 reminds us that limited understanding should never become confident assumptions about God. “Because God hath.” Let that settle it.
