Job 28:20 (KJV)
Whence then cometh wisdom? and where is the place of understanding?
Job 28 recounts the words of a man under extreme stress, pain and pressure. He longs for the wisdom to find his way out from under all of this. He recognizes the value of wisdom. It is more precious than any commodity upon earth. Men will go to extraordinary lengths to find silver, gold and precious stones. They will dig deep into the earth to uncover them.
But wisdom is different.
Job knows he cannot dig it out of the earth. He cannot find it within himself.
And he asks one of the most profound and important questions a man may ponder:

Whence then cometh wisdom? and where is the place of understanding?
I am happy he—under the inspiration of God, I am confident—answers his own question.
Job 28:23 (KJV)
God understandeth the way thereof, and he knoweth the place thereof.
God has, if you will, done the research.
Verses 24-27 tell us He looks to the ends of the earth. He sees under the whole heaven. He knows the weight of the winds and the measure of the waters. He knows what man cannot discover on his own. And God gives the answer.

And unto man he said, Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.
There it is!
- The fear of the Lord is wisdom.
- To depart from evil is understanding.
We can search everywhere else for the wisdom we need. We can look within ourselves. We can seek the counsel of men. We can study our circumstances from every possible angle.
But God has already told us where wisdom is found.
Fear the Lord.
That is wisdom.
Depart from evil.
That is understanding.
We can make wisdom complicated. God makes it plain. Fear the Lord. Depart from evil. It really is this simple.

The Answer Is Simple: Fear God. Depart Evil.
