The impotent man answered him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steppeth down before me.
The pool at Bethesda is a wonderment to me. It is a witness not to the superstition of men, but to their need. Who isn’t in some way in need?
But the pool is also a testimony to the limitations this world presents to those needs.
The pool may have been superstition.
I question whether anyone was ever really healed there, or whether people simply said they were healed there. There are plenty willing to prey on the desperation of others.
The pool, at best, only healed at certain seasons.
And those seasons were unpredictable and perhaps infrequent.
The pool, at best, only healed the first one in.
Desperate people seldom wait for another’s desperate need to be met.
The pool succumbed to time and change.
I understand the pool still exists, but it had to be rediscovered through archaeological excavation. If it has water in it these days, no one sits around waiting for the angel anymore. If it once could heal, it can no longer.
However, every limitation of the pool is met in Jesus Christ. He is no superstition. He lived, died for the sins of mankind, and rose again the third day—this is the most documented event in ancient human history. He is willing to save at any moment, in any season of life, in any decade, century, or millennium. He will save all who come to Him and will in no wise cast out anyone.
He is as powerful, as alive, and as concerned for souls today as He was 2,000 years ago. He has never needed to be rediscovered. No amount of time or dust has covered Him. He can and does still speak to men, save men, and change the lives of men today, just as He did while He walked on the earth.
People say lots of things trying to manipulate others.
Christ alone saves, not to get from us, but to give eternally to us.
