And Pilate asked him, saying, Art thou the King of the Jews? And he answered him and said, Thou sayest it.
This passage is repeated in Mark 15 and given a much fuller treatment in John 18. The phrase “Thou sayest it” seems like strange language, but it really isn’t.
It’s tantamount to an exclamation mark: “You said it!”
- It’s an affirmation.
- It’s not a denial, for sure.
- But neither is it avoidance.
It is not the same as saying, “That’s what you say.”
An honest reader of the passage would see in this phrase nothing other than Christ agreeing that He is exactly what Pilate asked if He was: the King of the Jews.
Any difficulty comes from Pilate’s response that he found no fault in Christ. And why should he? He was not ignorant of the times in which he lived. He must have been previously aware of the activities of Jesus. He was also aware of the attitudes and activities of the Jews.
He knew which posed the greater threat to Rome.
He knew Jesus was no threat.
Genuine followers of Christ are far more interested in the land of their true citizenship than they are in this one. We live here, and we care, but we are no threat to any economy of the present world. We are only salt and light.
And being salt and light is offensive enough—to those whose only hope is in this life.

The King Without Fault: Salt, Light, and Truth
Jesus Is King—But What Does That Mean for Christians Today?
When Jesus stood before Pilate in Luke 23:3, He did not deny His kingship. His answer reminds us that our greatest allegiance belongs to Christ, not this world.
Do you believe Christians can be faithful to Christ without becoming entangled in the battles of this world? Share your thoughts in the comments. I'd love to hear your perspective!
