The Love of Money

1 Timothy 6:10 KJV
For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.
The evil in loving money is that it robs us from loving God. Jesus did say, Matthew 6:24 KJV No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon. The love of money negates our love of God. We cannot love them both.

This is not to say that money in and of itself is evil. Jesus had one who kept their money. Jesus helped Peter by giving him money out of the fish's mouth.

In the same text that the Bible says the love of money is the root of all evil, the Bible goes on to say, 1 Timothy 6:17-19 KJV
Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy;
That they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to communicate;
Laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life.

Barnes Notes says of this passage, "...they were to make such a use of their property that it would contribute to their eternal welfare. It might be the means of exalted happiness and honor in heaven if they would so use it as not to interfere with religion in the soul, and so as to do the best possible."[1]
