Matthew 23:33
Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?
These are stern words indeed! The context of the passage forbids us to interpret it with any kind of compassion. Jesus' words to these men were condemning in the greatest sense.
Nevertheless, His question is the most heart searching and important question ever asked. It is the question every man, woman, boy, and girl must ask themselves if they would enter heaven; "How can ye escape the damnation of hell?"
Not by works of righteousness which we have doneAll our righteousness is as filthy rags before the Lord
Not by seeking God in our own wisdom
Scriptures are clear that no man seeketh after God
Not by believing in the one true GodThe devils believe and tremble
The only hope of escaping the damnation of hell is through the mercy of God provided by Jesus Christ. The greatest sin the Pharisees made was that of thinking their acts of religion made them righteous. The worst mistake we can make today is assuming the same thing.
