Proverbs 17:28 KJV
Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise: and he that shutteth his lips is esteemed a man of understanding.
This is such a well used passage that it is easy for it to go unnoticed in a daily devotion. Still, the truth of it is profound and the lesson of it is never learned quite well enough.
But this morning it comes alive in contrast to another verse that caught my attention...
Proverbs 17:19 KJV
He loveth transgression that loveth strife: and he that exalteth his gate seeketh destruction.
Gill says of this verse that it means, ".... that opens the door of his lips...."
The man
Who opens his mouth,
Who speaks without hesitation
Who has something to say about everything and everybody
"seeketh destruction."
Seldom is damage done when we shut our lips and hold our peace.
