Followers have a right to ask this

Joshua 1:17 KJV
According as we hearkened unto Moses in all things, so will we hearken unto thee: only the LORD thy God be with thee, as he was with Moses.

Gill says this is not to be taken as a condition of their following Joshua but as a reason for it. Joshua had proven himself as one that was strong and of good courage and as one who walked with the Lord. For forty years he had faithfully served alongside Moses. He and Caleb had urged Israel to enter into the Promised Land at Kadesh Barnea and they were the only two Jews still alive from that day to enter into the Promised Land these many years later. He had entered into battle while Moses stood watch and prayed (Aaron and Hur holding up his hands). Certainly he had proven himself.

But this is a fair thing for those who follow Christians to ask of us.

  • Be strong and of good courage and
  • The Lord thy God be with thee

We who ask souls to follow us to Christ have every reasonable right to ask us to keep ourselves in the presence of the Lord and to, through His presence, be strong and of good courage.

May the Lord make it so!
