Every Tribe; Every Man

Joshua 4:4-5 KJV
Then Joshua called the twelve men, whom he had prepared of the children of Israel, out of every tribe a man:
And Joshua said unto them, Pass over before the ark of the LORD your God into the midst of Jordan, and take ye up every man of you a stone upon his shoulder, according unto the number of the tribes of the children of Israel:

I am focusing on the word "every" in these two verses.

• Israel was to take "of every tribe a man" and then
• Those men were to take "every man of you a stone."

There is individual and personal responsibility here. Every one had to do his part. It is representative, I know. And there are some things in the Christian life that can be accomplished through representatives. For instance we can't individually go into all the world and preach the Gospel to every Creature. But we can accomplish this commission through representatives. We send missions and support them for that work.

• But every one of us ought to help support those missionaries
• And every one of us can be a witness in our own town

One reason for our personal participation is to teach the same participation to our children.

• That we have crossed into a life with Christ
• That we have served Christ in those ways He has called and
• That we can show that to the next generation

Is key to the continuity of a faithful Gospel message.
