Matthew
27:60 KJV
And laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the
rock: and he rolled a great stone to the door of the sepulchre, and departed.
That Joseph offers for Christ's body the tomb he had hewn
for himself is a powerful consideration.
Joseph had already
prepared for his body's death
Wise men do so. Though the place of burial is not the most
important thing, that a person consider his end and make eternal preparations
is of the utmost importance. His place was hewn out of a rock; it implies time,
effort, expense. It was no small thing to Joseph, his body's place of rest.
He gave this place
to Jesus
As important as eternity is, the best care of it is
committed to Christ. It sounds like dying daily that Christ may live in me.
Joseph would need a new place for his own body.
By giving it to
Jesus (no doubt an expensive gift) he had left himself in need.
So many give to the
Lord today only what doesn't actually cost them. The tithe isn't so much as
what this man gave. He had to begin all over again with a place for his own
body. Never forget that this gift also cost his family. They too had lost their
final resting place to Christ. No telling where they were buried for one thing
is sure, they would need a place like it some time.
Life given to Christ is life abandoned for Christ. We give
to him that which we can never reclaim and He gives to us that which we can
never lose.
