Matthew
26:22 KJV
And they were exceeding sorrowful, and began every one of them to
say unto him, Lord, is it I?
That the twelve were possessed of a sin nature is apparent
through a number of examples during the Gospel ministry of Christ.
- They
were chosen of the Lord
- They
had left all to follow Him
- They
would be faithful to his testimony to death
But they knew they possessed a sin nature. They knew that
it was possible that they would be the one to betray Chris. They knew their
hearts better than any man would have known, and each of them knew he was
capable of being the Judas.
And so it is true of us all. The sin nature in us is
capable of deceiving and slaying any of us. The wisest of us is aware of that
and sticks close to the Saviour lest, in a time of distance, we do the
unthinkable.
- Some
call it legalism
- Some
would accuse us of extremism
But the smartest Christian stays close to the Lord so that
he does not find himself close to sin.
