Matthew 23:15 KJV
Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!
for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make
him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves.
What lengths those who are not saved will go to convince others that
their ungodly deeds are righteous!
It is interesting to me to think if the Pharisees as "evangelistic."
The Jews were not sympathetic towards Gentile people. They viewed them as less
than human. But they had embraced the teachings of the Old Testament to make
proselytes. They "compassed land and sea" to get a convert.
It has been my observation that very often those involved in false
religions, and even some who are in rebellion, make concentrated efforts to
persuade others of their opinion while those who are truly saved might be the
worst at being witnesses.
The Judaizers chased after Paul, trying to persuade his converts of
their doctrines while God had to send persecution to the Christians in Jerusalem before they
scattered around the world preaching the gospel.
Christians ought to be witnesses. But we ought to be careful not to
equate being a witness to being spiritual or being godly. Some of the most
aggressive witnesses send their converts to eternal hell with their false
doctrine.
