Leviticus 10:1-2 KJV
And Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, took
either of them his censer, and put fire therein, and put incense thereon, and
offered strange fire before the LORD, which he commanded them not.
And there went out fire from the LORD, and
devoured them, and they died before the LORD.
Nadab and Abihu's sin was not that they did what they were told not to but that they
did what they were not told to.
In the name of
the Lord, they took upon themselves to add to that which the Lord had
commanded.
In much the same way we see a huge rise in presumptuous acts these days; people taking upon
themselves to claim something is worshipful and fine because:
One, God has
not commanded against it
Two, God has
let them get away with it
We should never
take the fact that God has not punished as a sign of approval. It is more often
a sign of mercy. Should God judge every worldly, sinful or unlawful act we
would all be in a horrible spot indeed.
I would just as
soon that men learn to honor the word of God than that God should need to force
it upon us.
