And Jesus entered and passed through Jericho
The context if the chapter clearly indicates that this event took place
very near to the crucifixion of the Lord. This was Jesus' last trip through Jericho . This was
Zaccheus' (although he could not have known it) last opportunity to meet Jesus.
Desperate times require desperate measures. Zaccheus could not have
known how desperate the times were.
- The press of the crowd
- The stature of the man and
- The lateness of the hour
impressed upon him the necessity of seeing Jesus at all costs.
Their culture is different than ours. I cannot imagine a professional
man of any sort today climbing a tree to see over a crowd. But it must not have
been that different in those days because Jesus took notice of it.
No one knows when will be his or her last opportunity to meet Jesus.
- An accident could happen
- An illness may be discovered or
- The Lord may return for His own
In any case right now us the only moment we have for certain. That
moment is best used in pursuit of fellowship with God.
