Psalms
49:8 KJV
(For the redemption of their soul is precious, and it ceaseth for
ever:)
The context of the passage is that of the wealthy man
attempting to obtain the security of a brother through riches; an attempt which
is impossible to accomplish. The soul, the eternal life of a man cannot be
purchased through any amount of worldly wealth. The price is:
- Too costly
- Too valuable
- Too precious
Notice that he does try. Even the man with no spiritual
understanding knows instinctively that there is eternal life and cares
that his loved ones possess it. His attempts to redeem them are secular and
fruitless, but real nonetheless; leaving me to see how important it is that we,
who know the way of redemption, faithfully preach it.
There is a way of redemption:
- It is priceless in value in that it
was purchased through the blood of God's only Son
- It is universal in scope in that it
is available to all who will trust Him and believe and
- It is eternal in its effect in that
"it ceaseth forever".
It was offered once for all and need not be offered again.
