1 Timothy 2:1-6 (KJV)
I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men;For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour;Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.

Every system of biblical interpretation has certain portions of the Bible that are “problems texts” for their theology. It’s because we see through a glass darkly. We have a perfect Word of God but we do not understand it perfectly. One of my joys to consider is that, in eternity, we will be blessed to learn more and more fully the depths of wisdom the Bible contains.
One system, Calvinism, teaches that God has only chosen or elected a certain number to be saved. This position explains for the Calvinist why there are so many people who cannot see the plan of salvation so clearly presented in the Bible. The Calvinist system has numbers of passage that they claim teach their position of the elect. We have in our text one of those that clearly teaches otherwise. “God…. Would have all men to be saved“
The Calvinist responds by saying this verse teaches God would have all sorts of men to be saved but not every man particularly.
This interpretation of the passage stretches it to say the least. It would have:
- Christians praying for all men if they are the elect men, but not if they are not
- God desiring the salvation of all men who are the elect men, but not if they are not and
- Christ giving Himself as a ransom for all men if they are the elect men, but not if they are not
Seems to me to be much more reasonable to read the passage for exactly what it says.
Let’s pray for all men, believing that God desires them to repent and be saved and that Christ died so that they might be saved if they repent.
