1 Timothy 3:16 (KJV)
And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.

I want to focus my thoughts on the word “mystery.”
There are, of course, elements of faith that are mysterious. They are beyond us:
- That God became man and dwelt among us.
- That He died so our sins could be forgiven.
- That He rose again and forever lives in glory
These are without a doubt bigger than us, more than we can fathom.
But this does not mean that believing them is irrational. We have, within the pages of the Bible:
- A proposition concerning God
- Thousands of years of experimentation in faith, and then
- The proof of that proposition in the person of Christ
- His life, death and resurrection are historical facts.
There is more than enough documentation to substantiate the truth of the gospel. And there are thousands of years of further experimentation in faith afterwards to demonstrate that faith is rational and sensible.
Contrast this with evolutionary theory.
- There is a document written not even hundreds of years ago.
- Nothing in the document has been proven though men have dedicated their lives and resources to do so.
- There are no witnesses,
- There is as great or greater disagreement among its followers as there is with Christ
- No experiment or experience has ever demonstrated it to be true
- It, in fact, is contrary to all that is observed and known
To accept it as truth requires a leap of faith that is mysterious indeed.
