Lamentations 4:1-2 (KJV)
How is the gold become dim! how is the most fine gold changed! the stones of the sanctuary are poured out in the top of every street. The precious sons of Zion, comparable to fine gold, how are they esteemed as earthen pitchers, the work of the hands of the potter!

We are prone to think of the church as the building we meet in when, in reality, the church is the composite of the members meeting there.
Here we have God using the building of the Temple as a metaphor of what had happened to His people. When Nebuchadnezzar invaded Jerusalem he tore their once ornate and beautiful temple to the earth. Stones, which were overlaid in bright gold, were first tarnished and then stripped of their value.
The picture is that of what had happened to God’s people.
- They had once been the testimony before the world of God’s glory
- They had become tarnished with the ideas of the world around them, finally
- They were decimated such that beasts behaved better
It isn’t difficult to see how this can be applied to the churches these days. We know of great churches, which once served as stations leading hundreds of souls to a saving faith in Christ, that became corrupted by the influences of worldliness. Compromises were made that would have been unimagined by pastors of years gone by. Eventually many of those churches became so soiled with ungodliness as to hardly pass as places of worship.
Jeremiah lamented over the state of Israel as we should lament over the state of so many churches today.
