Amos 3:1-2 (KJV)
Hear this word that the LORD hath spoken against you, O children of Israel, against the whole family which I brought up from the land of Egypt, saying,You only have I known of all the families of the earth: therefore I will punish you for all your iniquities.

What happens when the only message the preacher receives is against the nation? That seems to be the situation Amos found himself in. God had spoken against Israel. The message was not a positive one. What was Amos to do? The answer came in verse eight. The Lord had spoken. He could but prophesy.
America is in great need of some Amos type prophets today. In even the most faithful churches the tendency is to give a positive message. Often the message skirts around real issues completely, never addressing the hard issues. Messages are designed today to resolve relational problems or to answer perceived relevant subjects. Even so called expository preaching it presented in a manner that could not be construed as against the hearer.[1]
To be fair, the ultimate message of the Bible is positive and Old Testament prophets were quick to give those words of mercy and grace. The same is true today. There are many positive signs in our world. It’s right to make them known. But evil is waxing worse and preachers must address it.
What will you do as the message God gives turns increasingly against the direction of your world?
1] I don’t mean that preachers should be mean spirited. There ought always be a tear in our eye and a hopeful longing for repentance and conversion. However, this world is not going to get better. God has made it clear that things will get worse spiritually. Faithful preachers will point it out and call on people to confront the spiritual dearth.
