Jonah 1:3 (KJV)
But Jonah rose up to flee unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD, and went down to Joppa; and he found a ship going to Tarshish: so he paid the fare thereof, and went down into it, to go with them unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD.
But Jonah rose up to flee unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD, and went down to Joppa; and he found a ship going to Tarshish: so he paid the fare thereof, and went down into it, to go with them unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD.
In this account there are two wills in opposition one to another.
- The one is the will of God.
- The other is the will of Jonah.
Don’t forget that, by Jonah’s own admission, he feared the Lord. Since they had asked him his occupation it is reasonable to believe that he meant he served the Lord.
This servant of the Lord had a will opposed to the Lord.
Not surprisingly, when Jonah looked for a ship to remove from Israel, he found one. I can imagine him thanking God for the ship. He wanted to do something other than what God had told him and it looked as if God had made a way for him to do it.
Just because we find a way to do as we please doesn’t mean God has approved our doing it.
- If one goes to the seaside he will find a ship
- If one goes to enough banks he will find a loan
- If one listens to enough persons he will find one who supports his choice
God had already given Jonah His Word just as God has already given us the Word of God.
Nothing else matters.
We obey the Bible or we disobey God.
