Leviticus 17:11 (KJV)
For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul.
For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul.
There is such disrespect today:
- Disrespect for authority
- Disrespect for history
- Disrespect for chivalry
- Disrespect for country
It is no wonder that there is also such disrespect for Deity.
God taught the children of Israel to have respect for life by commanding that they were not to eat the blood of any animal. The reason, God said, was that the life was in the blood.
This command carries through into the New Testament, in Acts 15, where the church in Jerusalem, with the Apostles and leaders such as Paul and Barnabas, determined to lay no other burdens on the Gentile believers except that,
Acts 15:20 (KJV)
… they abstain from pollutions of idols, and from fornication, and from things strangled, and from blood.
… they abstain from pollutions of idols, and from fornication, and from things strangled, and from blood.
Ultimately the blood pointed to Jesus Christ. It is His blood, shed on Calvary
- That makes atonement for our sins
- That pays for our forgiveness and
- That opens the way to restored fellowship with God the Father
No man, Old Testament or New Testament; king, commoner or theologian, has the right to disrespect blood.
By refusing to eat it, we remember that it was not merely the death of Christ, but the shed blood of Christ that makes our salvation certain.
