James 4:11 (KJV) No Need To Speak Evil

James 4:11 (KJV)
Speak not evil one of another, brethren. He that speaketh evil of his brother, and judgeth his brother, speaketh evil of the law, and judgeth the law: but if thou judge the law, thou art not a doer of the law, but a judge.
I have come to see the book of James as addressed to that diverse bunch of Christians who were Jewish by blood and prone to cling to the Old Testament law. These believers (though believers) tended to be critical of those who were not “blessed” with their Jewish heritage. James’ admonished them to stop being critical. They were to quit speaking evil of those who had less experience with the law than they.
We would do well to learn from this. There is no reason to speak evil of other believers. Their experience may be different than ours. It may be best that we keep some distance from them. We may have need to expose errors taught by them. But we do not need to speak evil of them.
