1 Kings 11:4 (KJV)
For it came to pass, when Solomon was old, that his wives turned away his heart after other gods: and his heart was not perfect with the LORD his God, as was the heart of David his father.
For it came to pass, when Solomon was old, that his wives turned away his heart after other gods: and his heart was not perfect with the LORD his God, as was the heart of David his father.
It isn’t too difficult to see that the sort of love Solomon had for these women is not the holy sort that ought to exist between a man and his wife. Marriage ought to be a team; two people uniting together to form one whole, wholly dedicated to God. The marriage relationship ought to enhance our walk with God. It is never meant to replace it. Solomon loved these women in the sense of worship. They, in essence, became gods before God.
Solomon’s many wives, of necessity, left him with little influence in their lives. They continued in worship of false gods because he could not possibly have invested enough in each of them to lead them to knowledge of the true and living God. Having no influence on them, it wasn’t long before they had influence upon him.
This will be the case in every case; in a marriage, the one who is no influence will always be influenced.
No one should marry without investing in the relationship of marriage and the goal of that investment ought to be holiness for the whole.
