Revelation 20:1-2 (KJV)
And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand.And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years,

Whatever sort of chain that can hold Satan would certainly be a great one. The terms are physical in nature:

• A chain is physical 
• To lay hold is physical 
• To bind is physical 

As spiritually powerful as Satan is, the Spirit of God is so much greater that it is as if he were no more than mortal.
