2 Chronicles 24:22 (KJV)
Thus Joash the king remembered not the kindness which Jehoiada his father had done to him, but slew his son. And when he died, he said, The LORD look upon it, and require it.
Zechariah, the son of Jehoiada, was a good, godly and faithful man. His death at the command of Joash was wicked and, in light of the actions of his father in saving Joash’s young life and raising and coaching him through his early years, is an unimaginable evil. Joash was alive because of Zechariah’s father. Joash was king because of Zechariah’s father.
Zechariah was right to have had as his last words, “The Lord look upon it, and require it.”
In a sense every Christian may trust that the Lord does look upon and require a retribution for evils committed against us.
2 Thessalonians 1:5-6
Which is a manifest token of the righteous judgment of God, that ye may be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which ye also suffer:
Seeing it is a righteous thing with God to recompense tribulation to them that trouble you;
But the Bible gives us another example to attain unto. Jesus looked upon those who, without cause, crucified Him and prayed,
Luke 23:34
Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots.
Stephen attained this great heart when, as he was stoned to death, he prayed, Acts 7:60
And he kneeled down, and cried with a loud voice, Lord, lay not this sin to their charge. And when he had said this, he fell asleep.
We may know through faith that those who trouble us will be judged for it. But we don’t need to pray for it. A better man would pray for their salvation.
