2 Corinthians 12:19 (KJV)
Again, think ye that we excuse ourselves unto you? we speak before God in Christ: but we do all things, dearly beloved, for your edifying.
Again, think ye that we excuse ourselves unto you? we speak before God in Christ: but we do all things, dearly beloved, for your edifying.
There are two different interpretations possible for this passage:
- Don’t think this letter is a ploy to excuse my coming to you
- Don’t think those remarks of hardships are meant to endear you to me
The Apostle goes on from here to point out the purpose of his ministry:
- As a tool for Christ
- As a means to edify the brethren
- As a method to resolve conflict
- As a motivator to repentance
I have witnessed, over the years, many who look for the flaws, the failings and the humanity of their preachers and view those as excuses for their disregard of the ministry of that preacher.
No doubt he has many areas of weakness that might be exploited by others. He may choose to be transparent about his walk with God before his congregation. But his weaknesses are meant of God to be lessons of spiritual growth and not excuses for stagnation. His illustrations from personal life are not meant by him to glorify self but to stir others to glorify God.
Stop looking for the flaws in your pastor and allow him to help you follow Christ.
That’s what God called him to do.
