Proverbs 23:15 (KJV) The Tale of Two Hearts

Proverbs 23:15 (KJV)
My son, if thine heart be wise, my heart shall rejoice, even mine.
The proverbs are filled with passages that correlate a child’s behavior to their parents’ joy. In this one it is a tale of two hearts. The father’s plea is that his son gets wisdom.
Wisdom is not intellect. A person has little control over the power of his brain. Almost anyone can learn but some certainly have the capacity to grasp things easier and learn more than others. Opportunity for education can be elusive for some. Financial resources, proximity to educational programs and etc. might limit one person’s opportunities more than another. Wisdom, on the other hand, is almost universally available. With the exception of the most severely mentally handicapped anyone may:
  • Fear the Lord which is the beginning of wisdom
  • Apply themselves to do right which is wise
  • Avoid that which is wrong, again, very wise
  • Choose good company
  • Follow sound counsel
And so on
I noticed that the father rejoices not when his son rejoices, or is successful or is educated. The father’s heart rejoices when his son is wise.
Wisdom is the principle thing.
