Isaiah 44:18 (KJV)
They have not known nor understood: for he hath shut their eyes, that they cannot see; and their hearts, that they cannot understand.
They have not known nor understood: for he hath shut their eyes, that they cannot see; and their hearts, that they cannot understand.
Someone said, “ The difference between faith and religion is the 18 inches from our head to our heart.” That’s a truth born out in this verse. Men see with their eyes but they understand with their hearts.
Herein lies the danger with so much of modern Christianity, even within Fundamental Baptists. The current movement is toward knowledge, not understanding. Many of today’s young Christians, having grown up in sound churches, are leaving them claiming that their fathers in the faith had passion without knowledge. They are now buying into the teachings of men they deem to be of better scholarship, the Reformers. This is leading them to embrace ideas of belief that are based on observation rather than faith.
Recently I heard of a movement to deny the leading of the Holy Spirit outside of the Bible. As I understand it, they would say God’s Spirit does not lead lost men to do things that accomplish God’s will or that God’s Spirit does not lead Christians in matters not specifically addressed in the Bible. This denial of the spiritual nature of faith leaves the heart out of the Christian equation.
I agree that, in matters of the spiritual and the heart, one must take care never to place that above the Word of God. The Holy Spirit never leads one to do contrary to the Word of God. But He does provide leading in issues other than the Word of God.
It’s the difference between what the eye sees and what the heart understands.
