John to the seven churches which are in Asia: Grace be unto you, and peace, from him which is, and which was, and which is to come; and from the seven Spirits which are before his throne;

The commentaries all style this as “the usual salutation.” I notice that it does not come from usual sources and neither does it extend, in this case, to a common audience.

- The Lord Jesus Christ
How remarkable to receive a wish of grace and peace and to receive it from God.
To the seven churches
These are distinct churches. They each had their own circumstances and they had each responded to those circumstances in their own way. Some of them were great churches. Some of them just thought they were.

These churches seem to represent what any church might face and how any church might respond to what they face at different times in their lives.
These churches also seem to provide a time map of church history. Some reject this idea, and there is certainly a lot of room for human speculation when you allow for it.
What amazes me is that God has the same desire for every one of these churches.
Some of them receive a severe rebuke from Jesus.
Nevertheless God’s heart is that they have grace and peace.

God still offers them grace and peace. Some of them are suffering.

The desire of God is nevertheless, grace and peace.
