Revelation 9:1-2 (KJV) Open the Pit

Revelation 9:1-2 (KJV)
And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit.
And he opened the bottomless pit; and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by reason of the smoke of the pit.

A few points I would like to make clear from the onset; I believe the Revelation to be prophetic of things yet to come and to be quite literal. This is to include what is written in Revelation 9, properly interpreted. A judgment of demons whose destructive powers are symbolized by locust will happen as it is described. 

I read it and, at first glance, think, “No. Don’t open the pit!” It certainly looks as if the angel had the power to prevent the judgment if only he had left the pit locked. 

But then I remember the purpose of the Tribulation. This judgment is necessary to bring about the plan of God for His glory and for the eternal good of mankind. 

I am reminded that we too need pressures and difficulties that serve to unlock and release the wickedness that is within us. Some people are incredibly good at covering what are their true thoughts and intentions. I am not advocating for free reign of our inner beasts. I am advocating for that pressure and stress, those forms of trials God brings into our lives to show to us our true selves so that we might confess and address those sins perhaps even hidden from self. 

Only when we confront them may we conquer them.
