Jeremiah 51:5 (KJV)
For Israel hath not been forsaken, nor Judah of his God, of the LORD of hosts; though their land was filled with sin against the Holy One of Israel.
For Israel hath not been forsaken, nor Judah of his God, of the LORD of hosts; though their land was filled with sin against the Holy One of Israel.
What a word of comfort! I can imagine that such a message might not seem like much when at first it is heard. Jeremiah’s sermons went something like this:
- Israel has sinned
- God will use Babylon to chasten Him
- Israel must submit to this rod but
- God has not forsaken Israel and
- Babylon will be defeated
When they were in the midst of the “Israel has sinned” or “Israel must submit” parts of the sermon it might not seem so comforting to hear that God has not forsaken them. But in the middle of Babylon, during times of great trial, as when Haman attempted their extermination[1], such a promise would hold great comfort.
We are in a world filled with sin and, it would be foolish for us to deny our own complicity. God uses circumstances, some very unpleasant and often from sources we despise. But in the thick of it we have this wonderful and comforting assurance, “Though we have sinned against the Holy One, He has not forsaken us.”
[1]Esther 3:6 (KJV)
And he thought scorn to lay hands on Mordecai alone; for they had shewed him the people of Mordecai: wherefore Haman sought to destroy all the Jews that were throughout the whole kingdom of Ahasuerus, even the people of Mordecai.
And he thought scorn to lay hands on Mordecai alone; for they had shewed him the people of Mordecai: wherefore Haman sought to destroy all the Jews that were throughout the whole kingdom of Ahasuerus, even the people of Mordecai.
