Luke 7:40-43 (KJV) Who Loves Him Most?

Luke 7:40-43 (KJV)
And Jesus answering said unto him, Simon, I have somewhat to say unto thee. And he saith, Master, say on.
There was a certain creditor which had two debtors: the one owed five hundred pence, and the other fifty.
And when they had nothing to pay, he frankly forgave them both. Tell me therefore, which of them will love him most?
Simon answered and said, I suppose that he, to whom he forgave most. And he said unto him, Thou hast rightly judged.

At first glance we might assume that the one who had been forgiven of five hundred pence was the one forgiven of most. I am guessing Simon certainly thought so. But I think it’s a wrong assumption. Value is relative. It is possible that the one forgiven of the fifty pence was in a more desperate place than the one with five hundred. 

Think of the widow who cast in her two mites. Jesus said she had given more than those who had cast in great sums because they had given out of their wealth and she out of her poverty. It’s relative to a person’s position. 

This is good news. The parable Jesus presented wasn’t about creditors and debtors. It was about sin and forgiveness. The good news is that, whether you are the worst offender (in the eyes of man) or a good and righteous gentleman (in the eyes of others) each can be equally forgiven of much and thus, love God equally. 

We can all, in effect, love God most.
