Luke 23:50-51 (KJV)
And, behold, there was a man named Joseph, a counsellor; and he was a good man, and a just:
(The same had not consented to the counsel and deed of them;) he was of Arimathaea, a city of the Jews: who also himself waited for the kingdom of God.
And, behold, there was a man named Joseph, a counsellor; and he was a good man, and a just:
(The same had not consented to the counsel and deed of them;) he was of Arimathaea, a city of the Jews: who also himself waited for the kingdom of God.
The virtue is in the waiting.
Joseph of Arimathaea was a good and just man. Because of that he did not consent to the counsel’s condemning of Jesus. But the thing that made him just was that he waited for the kingdom of God.
Character is not the product of deeds. Rather deeds are a reflection of character. Character is the product of something deeper, outside of self. Character is produced from our values – our core beliefs.
Joseph was a good man and just because he waited for the kingdom of God. He had a faith in the promises of God, yet unfulfilled.
Consider; it would require no faith and therefore build no character had he merely believed in the history of Israel. It takes no faith, and therefore produces no character to believe in history. Secular character is produced by learning from history. Spiritual character is produced by believing what biblical history prophesies. Because God did these things, we can be assured He will do these other things.
Joseph of Arimathaea was a good man and just because he believed God would do what He promised He would do, and had not yet fulfilled.
