Deuteronomy 7:25 (KJV)
The graven images of their gods shall ye burn with fire: thou shalt not desire the silver or gold that is on them, nor take it unto thee, lest thou be snared therein: for it is an abomination to the LORD thy God.

Twice in this chapter, God warned Israel of the potential snare the Canaanites posed.
- They were more in number
- They were well established
- They were wickedly idolatrous
- They had the potential to turn the hearts of Israel, especially the young ones, from following God
Still, God brought them into the land.
Note, God clearly pronounced His love for Israel.
- They were holy unto Him
- They were special unto Him
Yet:
- He removed them from Egypt where they were protected from compromise
- He exposed them to the dangers of a forty year wilderness journey and
- He led them to a land where they could potentially be led astray
God told them not to be afraid of the Canaanites, but to have nothing to do with them either. God’s promise was to give Israel the power to dispossess them, but not all at once. They would have to trust God. They would have to resist compromise. They would have to wait on God’s timing.
Parents could learn a thing or two right here. We must teach our children to walk with God but we can’t protect them from the choice not to walk with God. It is impossible and wrong to keep them from potential snares. It is only right to warn them about the snares.
God is not interested in:
- our comfort,
- our protection or
- our triumphs
What God is interested in is our faith.
We walk by faith, not by sight.
