In so many respects the transition from Moses to Joshua is typical of that from the Old Testament law to New Testament grace.
Moses died
As great a man as he was, even he fell short of the Promised Land. We can never be good enough to merit the favor and the blessings of God. If we live of the law, so shall we die; of the law and short of the glory of God.

Joshua was merely a servant
Unlike Moses, Joshua was not raised in a palace and never received the education of kings. Joshua had not the huge life changing experiences of:

- Being driven from Egypt,
- Witnessing the burning bush or
- Speaking to God face to face
as Moses did. He was simply a servant. While Moses was on the hill lifting his hands to God, Joshua was in the trenches, doing battle with the enemy. Joshua is nobody made somebody by grace.
Schofield says Moses is the first step of redemption, the coming out of the world and Joshua is the second step, the coming into God’s promise. Both are necessary parts of redemption.
Canaan isn’t a type of heaven for there was conflict there. It is a type of spiritual victory. May God grant us each the grace to be victors.
