Joshua 14:12 (KJV)
Now therefore give me this mountain, whereof the LORD spake in that day; for thou heardest in that day how the Anakims were there, and that the cities were great and fenced: if so be the LORD will be with me, then I shall be able to drive them out, as the LORD said.
Now therefore give me this mountain, whereof the LORD spake in that day; for thou heardest in that day how the Anakims were there, and that the cities were great and fenced: if so be the LORD will be with me, then I shall be able to drive them out, as the LORD said.
Caleb’s claim to the mountain was predicated upon:
A promise of God
Caleb’s first appeal to Joshua was, “Thou knowest the thing that the LORD said unto Moses the man of God“. Caleb claimed the promise of God’s Word.

An obedience to God
The Bible says in verse 14, “Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenezite unto this day, because that he wholly followed the LORD God of Israel.” Though the promises of God are unconditional, many of them are only applicable through obedience. Salvation, for instance, is based solely upon the Cross of Christ. There is nothing that must be done to earn salvation because Jesus already earned it. However, only those who place faith in Christ find it applicable to them.

A continuance with God
Caleb had been faithful to God forty-five years earlier and nothing had changed. His obedience to God, his faith in God’s Word and his zeal in living for God had not diminished after all of those years. It is impossible to lose our salvation, but we can surely lose the enjoyment of it or the usefulness of it if we let the fire of God die out in our hearts. Caleb claimed the mountain not only for him but for his successors. While one can’t lose his salvation by quitting his life for God, he certainly can lose the opportunity of salvation for his children and children’s children.
