1 Samuel 25:10 (KJV)
And Nabal answered David’s servants, and said, Who is David? and who is the son of Jesse? there be many servants now a days that break away every man from his master.

It seems to me that so much emphasis is placed on David or Abigail that Nabal is sometimes relegated to an afterthought in this narrative. Much good could come from meditating upon him, his character, and his ruin.
Nabal prospered in a tough time. Whether it was honest prosperity is questionable. He’s married well which is likely due to his wealth. He knows he lives in tough times. He is aware of David, or stories of men like him. He is aware of the days, and he is suspicious of young men with influence. He is cynical and selfish. He might have become a loner because he doesn’t know who to trust. Saul is no great leader, but who can tell if anyone would be better?
Seems like we might be living in a similar time. Who knows if there will ever be another politician we can trust? Young people seem to be so full of self. Millennials seem to be without initiative. If a young man does have drive, he is probably worldly. It wouldn’t be difficult to become a Nabal nowadays.
Better get our eyes on Jesus. There is plenty of reason to have hope and a tender heart for others.
