Luke 14:1-4 (KJV) A Busy Sabbath Dinner

Luke 14:1-4 (KJV)
And it came to pass, as he went into the house of one of the chief Pharisees to eat bread on the sabbath day, that they watched him.
And, behold, there was a certain man before him which had the dropsy.
And Jesus answering spake unto the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath day?
And they held their peace. And he took him, and healed him, and let him go;
Though it seems little was made of Jesus’ healing the man with dropsy, it might have been because of the setting. This was a dinner, with guests, on the Sabbath. It appears to have been a large and diverse gathering.  I cannot imagine that this was accomplished without a great deal of work.
  • There would be set up
  • There would be food preparation
  • There would be food service
  • There would be clean up afterward
It is obvious that people need to eat, even on the Sabbath. It seems that, though the Mosaic Law strictly forbids this,[1]they had made an exception for eating. Jesus treated the ill man’s need as much the same thing. It was as necessary as the meal. It was as obvious as is eating. It also gave authority to those lessons He would teach later at the dinner.

[1]Exodus 16:22-26 (KJV)
And it came to pass, that on the sixth day they gathered twice as much bread, two omers for one man: and all the rulers of the congregation came and told Moses.
And he said unto them, This is that which the LORD hath said, To morrow is the rest of the holy sabbath unto the LORD: bake that which ye will bake to day, and seethe that ye will seethe; and that which remaineth over lay up for you to be kept until the morning.
And they laid it up till the morning, as Moses bade: and it did not stink, neither was there any worm therein.
And Moses said, Eat that to day; for to day is a sabbath unto the LORD: to day ye shall not find it in the field.
Six days ye shall gather it; but on the seventh day, which is the sabbath, in it there shall be none.
Numbers 15:32-35 (KJV)
And while the children of Israel were in the wilderness, they found a man that gathered sticks upon the sabbath day.
And they that found him gathering sticks brought him unto Moses and Aaron, and unto all the congregation.
And they put him in ward, because it was not declared what should be done to him.
And the LORD said unto Moses, The man shall be surely put to death: all the congregation shall stone him with stones without the camp.
I assume he was gathering sticks to make a fire and prepare food.
