Acts 5:2 (KJV)
And kept back part of the price, his wife also being privy to it, and brought a certain part, and laid it at the apostles’ feet.

Just one chapter previous, the ending of chapter four, we find Barnabas cited as an example of those who had land, and other possessions, who sold them and gave the money to be used for the care of others in the church. This action was commendable. It’s not communistic or even communal. It’s the prompting of the Holy Ghost of God to be a blessing and a help to the people of God and to the church of God. It was done willingly, freely and open-heartedly. But just like anything else that is commendable, good and right, it can be misinterpreted. Those of lesser motivations may imitate the practice for personal gain.
We should be careful not to see this as an isolated spirit having to do only with the selling of possessions and the gifts given to the church. This spirit may present itself in any number of ways:
- In service at the church
- In acts of feigned worship
- In attempts at leadership in the congregation
The spirit was one of self-elevation. Ananias and Sapphira wanted to be seen as of high Christian character. The trouble was, they were not of the same character they wished to be thought of.
Whenever we are tempted to impress men we are in danger of this sin. God sees us for who we are. We are on solid ground with Him when we willingly confess who we are, even if it is not who we wish we were. It is then that God can make us different than we are.
