Job 1:9 (KJV)
Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, Doth Job fear God for nought?
Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, Doth Job fear God for nought?
The challenge is from Satan, but it has more bearing than we probably want to give it. American Christianity, evangelism and soul-winning is built almost entirely on the premise that, if we will but turn to the Lord, His blessings will fall down upon us. And by blessings we mean those things we define and good for us. Satan’s question was simple, “Doesn’t Job only fear You because you have blessed him with comforts?” In almost four decades of pastoring, I’ve dealt with this question more times than I can count;
- “Pastor, if God is so good and so powerful, why didn’t He protect my son?”
- “Pastor, I’ve been faithful to church and to tithe. Why did God let me lose my job?”
- “Pastor we love the Lord. Why is life always so hard for me?”
- “Pastor I pray all the time. Why doesn’t God give me what I ask?”
In effect what they are implying is, “Pastor, I have feared God for naught-for nothing.” In their minds, their Christian living has been useless. They feared God but He failed them.
I think we have it wrong. We ought not to fear God to get from God. We ought to fear God, to love God, to worship Him and to trust Him because He is worthy.
Only and always because He is worthy.
