Psalms 39:1-2 (KJV) Bridle It!

Psalms 39:1-2 (KJV)
I said, I will take heed to my ways, that I sin not with my tongue: I will keep my mouth with a bridle, while the wicked is before me.
I was dumb with silence, I held my peace, even from good; and my sorrow was stirred.
What an interesting idea. The Psalmist admitted his heart was hot within him. But rather than sinning with his tongue, he put a bridle in his mouth. He kept silent and refused to speak either the angry words he felt or even good words he might have. He put a bridle in it.
A bridle is not meant to keep a horse from moving. It is meant to keep control of the horse. It is meant to communicate with the horse what his command is:
  • Sometimes whoa
  • Sometimes right
  • Sometimes left
  • Sometimes ahead slow
  • Sometimes you give him his head
I suggest that many people, even good people, in this time of emotional heat, and sorrow, ought to bridle their mouth until they know they have heard from God.
To my readers:
