Jeremiah 11:13 (KJV)
For according to the number of thy cities were thy gods, O Judah; and according to the number of the streets of Jerusalem have ye set up altars to that shameful thing, even altars to burn incense unto Baal.
These were the people of Judah, the apple of God's eye, the cream of the crop if you will. Yet God says of them that every city had its own gods and every street had its own altar on it.
Verse 14 says, “Therefore pray not thou for this people…” There comes a point when the only correct path is to allow a person or a people to suffer their judgment. That is what happened with Judah. The correct path for them at this point was Babylonian captivity.
I don’t know that it has ever been true, but I am convinced that America has thought of itself as the apple of God's eye, the cream of the crop, the best of the best. The fact is we have about as many gods as we have cities and we have about as many places to pay homage to those gods as we have streets. America (I realize we are not the only ones enduring these troubles) has found herself in the midst of terrible calamities. Instead of forging through them in the power of our own might, we must humble ourselves and turn from our wicked ways.
Only then can we hope to have the ear of God in prayer.
Only then may we hope God will heal our land rather than continue this judgment.
