Jeremiah 42:2-3 (KJV)
And said unto Jeremiah the prophet, Let, we beseech thee, our supplication be accepted before thee, and pray for us unto the LORD thy God, even for all this remnant; (for we are left but a few of many, as thine eyes do behold us:)
That the LORD thy God may shew us the way wherein we may walk, and the thing that we may do.
It turns out that the request of the people was not sincere. But it would have been a welcome thing to hear.
- They asked him to pray for them
- They asked for directions from the Lord and
- They promised to obey them whatever they were
We know that they did not obey and. in fact, forced Jeremiah to go with them in their disobedience.
But Jeremiah was faithful.
- They asked him to pray for them, and he did.
- They asked for a message from God and he got it
- They asked him to show them the thing they should do, and he did it
We can’t force people to do the right thing. We can be faithful to God and to them anyway.
